The Pure Bliss of Cruising

Thursday, February 16, 2023

After dinner, Cliff sat on the balcony for about an hour, watching the skies soften and the breezes lifting as the Island Princess eased away from the dock in Melbourne. I told him he could leave the sliding glass door open for a while so that I could enjoy it while working on the blog.

Later, around 10:00 PM, as Cliff slept, I slipped out onto the balcony, because it seemed the ship had almost stopped. Stretched out before me across the entire horizon were the glistening lights of Melbourne, Australia, in all their possible colors. The ship was gliding slowly, quietly passing each blinking, green lit marker. The soft swishing of the waves from the wake whispered quietly in the night. It was mesmerizing.

Just as I was downloading this photo, an enormous cricket dropped down, bounced off my forehead, and landed on the desk! I nailed him with a shoe, and then looked up and saw other small insects and flies had found their way inside as well. When leaving Bay of Islands, a horse fly got into our room. Lesson learned — enjoy the balcony, but don’t leave the door open if you don’t want hitchhikers.

Regardless….how truly magical is this night, and how very blessed we are to be traveling on this mystical-like journey!

Early morning sunrises and splendid sunsets are some of the best parts of cruising. Below is a photo of sunset from the ship on Wednesday, February 15.
