When you visit so many Mediterranean cities so close together, it is easy to forget whether you have visited a particular place. We actually thought we had not been to Catania. We took a Hop On Hop Off Bus tour from the port on a whim. By the time we arrived at Aci Castello after a drive north along the Atlantic, I started getting deja vu. Cliff and Joan said they didn’t remember any of it, but it all came back to me, and as soon as we returned to the ship, I looked it up, and we DID visit Catania during the World Cruise and loved it.

The Roman amphitheater ruins beneath the street in the middle of the city, the Botanical Gardens, the Fountain of the Elephant, the beautiful shopping district, Piazza del Duomo, Fontana dell’Amenano, the wonderful food — we loved this place!

Visiting again brought back wonderful memories, and I must say that Catania must be one of the loveliest cities in Italy.

Riding the HoHo in Catania is the best way to see some of the major sights. Just ask the driver to let you off in the shopping district, and you can walk back to the ship after a leisurely lunch.
